A lecture named “Fractal-Between Science and Art” was delivered by Professor Yin Junfeng, Doctorial Supervisor from Tongji University on May 16, as one of “AHS Forum” lectures in High School Attached to Shandong Normal University (AHS). Present at the lecture were Mr. Zhang Xianchen, Vice-Principal of AHS, Mr. Wang Zhimin. Deputy Director of AHS Administrative Office. Mr. Zhuang Zengchen, Deputy Secretary-General of AHS Communist Youth League Committee, Mdm Li Guiling, Deputy Director of AHS Teaching and Research Office, and over 160 students.

In simple language, professor Yin introduced in the lecture a brand-new theory and a subject that attracted considerable attention. Starting with its concrete applications, Professor Yin introduced the concept of Fractal and then elaborated with detailed samples the self-similarity and other characteristics of Fractal. Professor Yin exemplified the applications of Fractal in textile industry, wallpaper industry, layout design, visual engineering and other fields of modern science and life, well demonstrating the integration of science and art as well as the combination of mathematics and aesthetics and at the same time uncovering the profound scientific methodology and mathematic philosophy implied in Fractal. The lecture enabled students to know of Fractal, a geometry representing the nature in a real sense and experience the splendid math beyond their class and its beauty, thus significantly broadening students’ vision and helping transform their approach to understand the nature.

Professor Yin’s lecture, to the request of teachers and students present, ended up with a brief introduction of the charming campus and vibrant culture of Tongji University, which aroused students’ yearning for key universities.
