On December 27, 2015 the “A torch lit to enlighten people’s hearts-2015 Ji’nan Models” ceremony was held in the lecture hall of the central campus ofShandongUniversity. The group of teachers and students of High School Attached to Shandong Normal University (AHS), who helped an elder faint on the road, was endowed the title of “Top Ten Ji’nan Models”. Sun Ping, an AHS teacher, and Cai Jingwen, a student of Class 2 Grade 2015, together with Tan Yinghai, General Secretary of AHS CPC Committee and Yang Ping, Director of AHS Publicity Office, went to the ceremony on behalf of group to accept the prize.

“Top Ten Ji’nan Models” was initiated by the Publicity Department of CPC Ji’nan Municipal Committee, the Civilization Office of Ji’nan Municipal Government andShandong Commercial News, aimed to “light a torch to enlighten people’s hearts”, set up models for citizens to learn from and nurture justice and kindness in our society. Models would come into being through the initial recommendation of communities, social units or sectors and then go though the professional and subjective selection made by the jury following the rule of democratic discussions. Over 50 Ji’nan models from 5 categories, including “doing boldly what is righteous”, “being honest and friendly”, “fulfilling filial duty and being attached to relatives”, “loving and respecting his or her job” and “being devoted to social charity”, were finally voted out of hundreds of candidates. Those models were then publicized in places like communicates, social units, municipal squires and transport stations. Eventually “Top Ten Ji’nan Models” were recognized in view of the views and suggestions from different social sectors as well as experts. AHS group was rewarded “Top Ten Ji’nan Models” and “the Model of Being Honest and Friendly” for their act of providing immediate help for an elder falling down.

The accident happened at about 5 pm, September 29,2015 inthe north of the AHS schoolyard gate, when an elder walked alone on the road and suddenly fell down due to an acute heart attack. Students were leaving school after class at that time and in face of the emergency people present at the scene, including teachers, AHS security personnels, students and parents, acted immediately, calling 120, evacuating the traffic and help board the elder into the ambulance. On October 12 an acknowledgement letter was put up at the AHS schoolyard gate by the elder’s families, expressing the sincere gratitude to the AHS teachers and students for their kindness. From the letter we knew the elder was an 88-year-old professor who had retired from the Politics School of Shandong Normal University and passed away despite the immediate help from those kind people. In accordance with the elder’s articles of creed his families wrote this acknowledgement letter.

“We didn’t hesitate and it is quite natural to help a person who fell down by your side. We just did what should be done,” said Sun Ping, the AHS teacher who participated in the act of saving the elder. Tan Yinghai, General Secretary of the CPC Committee of High School Attached toShandongNormalUniversity, pointed out that the event has well embodied the spirit of being responsible for our community and courageously taking on the due obligations as a citizen. Each individual of AHS will inherit this spirit and carry forward the socialist core value of being kind and friendly. Each graduate of AHS will spread this spirit around every corner of our society and make a warmer and better world.
